How the Fashion Buying Public Moved from the High Street to Online
Sunday May 09th 2010, 6:14 am

The downturn in the economic system has made us rethink our fashion statements. been well commented that the recession has to a great extent impacted the fashion industry. Although downturns in the economy come and go, this recent one we’re experiencing is going to have a long-term impression on how we see fashion. We are living in a very practical age these days. Prior to these pragmatic days we’re now living in, we revelled in the decadance of fashion - nothing was excessive or too costly - you could only be accused of being too dreary. It’s different today though : the labels and catwalks are getting bad publicity. Even if you look at the more affordable labels, suddenly they’re admonished for sweatshop factories. Is it that everyone suddenly become so incredibly difficult to please now?

First off, fashion isn’t dead. In point of fact, looking online there is strong competition between online fashion retail merchants (e.g. searching for pink evening bags) - a signal there is still strong demand and supply. What’s long gone is the old-school way we saw fashion - of being dictated to by the big labels. In reality, fashion has always followed our lifestyles rather than the other way around, and nowadays many issues are turning us off big fashion brands. First Of All, people are much more mindful of globalisation, and showing off your clothing labels can give the impression you are narcissistic and uncaring in many peer groups today. Secondly, we’re bust! Style has invariably been seen as something of a luxury, not a necessity. In a recession, luxury items get hit the worst. Lastly, people express themselves a lot more individually nowadays -we don’t need to be ordered how to act or what to wear, there’s no large “clan” to fit in to or assimilate their thoughts, and fashion requires that kind of herd-like thinking to trade in large amounts.

How does the future look for the fashion industry? As ever, they must adapt to exist - create a wider range of clothing lines to cater to more corners of the marketplace. If you’re a small store selling individual clothing at a cheap price, you have a strong business model in spite of the dismal economic times we are in. Nowadays, individuals are combining their styles, buying from marketplaces and smaller, inexpensive fashion stores.

Barefoot and Rainy Days Just Don’t Mix
Tuesday March 09th 2010, 5:21 pm
Filed under: Exercise + Fitness, Trappings

In August 2009, I made the switch from conventional shoes to Vibram Fivefingers. They’re toed shoes with a minimalist flat rubber sole. In essence, they’re like walking barefoot with a little extra callous to protect the bottom of your feet. I made the switch because my feet weren’t rehabbing effectively and the idea of using every muscle in my foot as God intended sounded like a winner. Why not naturally strengthen my feet rather than rely on some time-wasting and cost-heavy rehabilitation program?

The downside is that the Fivefingers aren’t fit for ALL conditions. They’re great all the time indoors with closed loop air conditioners and even outside under MOST circumstances. The one weather condition they do not, I repeat, NOT perform well under is moisture. The shoe itself is more of a mesh toed sock attached to a thin rubber sole. There is no rubber wall on the side of the foot, so one step in 1/2 of water and you’re wading through lake swishyfoot.

Imagine heading out to work one morning and stepping in a cold puddle of water that soaks your foot. You drive to work, hoping and expecting your shoes to dry quickly upon arrival. After three hours, your shoes are not any drier than the moment you took them off. And then you have to get up from your desk and conduct yourself as a professional in the office. With cold, wet, squishy toes. Yes, squishy toes. It’s bad enough that the overhead office lighting makes your toed shoes stand out like sore thumbs. Now you’re awkward AND uncomfortable.

Conclusion? Pass. On the unfortunate days when we have much needed rain, I wear traditional shoes (typically Sketchers or Diesels) to work. And when the rain lasts for more than a day or two, my feet, ankles, and knees all begin to ache from the unnatural position my body is forced to take when I walk. They are pains I used to live with every day. But now that I don’t have to, I resent them and notice them all the more.

So far, Vibram only has one solution to water, and that’s a neoprene insulated shoe intended for snow and arctic sports like kayaking and trekking up a snowy mountain. In more temperate climates, these shoes will make your feet sweat. So you can either have squishy toes or sweaty feet. What awesome choices.

So which will it be? Sweaty or squishy? You be the judge.

The Dolce Gabbana group also includes another design offshoot called D&G. The D&G label is targeted at a younger audience and encompasses clothing and accessories, including eyeglasses.

D&G Eyeglasses are the more casual, less costly line of eyewear from the Dolce and Gabbana brand.
